US President Donald Trump announced new chip tariffs with broad exemptions, leading US stocks to open higher on Thursday but close lower. The DJIA, which soared by as much as 305 points, gradually ebbed back to end down 224 points or 0.5% at 43,968. The S&P 500 finished down 5 points or 0.1% at 6,340; and the Nasdaq also saw its gains narrow, swelling by as much as 238 points or 1.1%, but closing up 73 points or 0.4% at 21,242.
Apple (AAPL.US) drifted higher by 3.2% after a 5% surge on Wednesday, following the company's announcement of an additional US$100 billion investment in its US operations. Trump demanded the resignation of Intel (INTC.US) CEO, leading to a 3% slump in its stock price.
On Wednesday evening, Trump announced a 100% tariff on imported chips, with exemptions for companies producing in the US. Nvidia (NVDA.US) concluded higher by 0.8%, AMD (AMD.US) shot up 5.7%, TSMC (TSM.US) jumped up nearly 5%, and Micron (MU.US) rallied 2.8%.
